Examples of Exeter Bookbinder's "Royal Books"

The story behind "The Big Book of Thanks"

We were contacted by the Diocese Office, requesting a meeting to discuss a making a book that had to be a new binding, but for a very special person. At the meeting, we discovered the book was going to be given as a gift to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The suggested template for the book had plastic see through covers, with a title page displaying the official Diamond Jubilee logo, which was extremely bright to say the least. This format did not appear appropriate to be presented to a monarch.

We discussed this, with the Diocese, and they agreed that this had been their thoughts also. The end result was dramatically different!

A huge tome around 20” tall bound in a bright red high grade Morocco leather, with five raised bands to the spine and a black leather label with gold lettering. It truly looked a Royal book fit for a Queen!

The Lord Lieutenant of Devon presented the book to Her Majesty in July 2012. We were informed through the Diocese that H M sent her thanks and best wishes to all that had contributed to the book.

So from Exeter to the Palace! What a privilege it was to work on this special project. Below is a series of photos showcasing the event. (Hover mouse over for larger image)

The book for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, to celebrate the birth of Prince George

The Queen's "Big Book of Thanks"

The book for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, celebrating the birth of Prince George was commissioned by the Dean of Exeter Jonathon Draper, in order to celebrate the birth of the future Monarch of the United Kingdom, Prince George. It was presented as a gift to the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge, by the Lord Lieutenant, Sir Eric Dancer.

Approx. 11" tall and 8" wide, the volume was bound in burgundy Morocco leather, with a black leather inset label, decorated with gold lettering, with a message to the Royal couple. Inside, the volume had hand sewn signatures of best quality paper that is acid free and yet recycled paper!
